DBS protection of vulnerable individuals -short summary

Until very recently, DBS checks were NOT formal requirements for Pharmacy professionals, despite being necessary for most healthcare staff in the U.K. (there are different requirement for different countries within the Union).  Proposed changes to the Pharmacy Contract will require this to be mandatory no later than March 2026.  If you need a check urgently, or if you are not a pharmacy professional and are required to complete a DBS check, please contact us and we will advise and resolve with you. We recommend that everyone should avoid a last minute rush, which is bound to put pressure on the application system.

DBS – Disclosure and Barring Service is required in certain situations and to carry out certain jobs. Most jobs in Community Pharmacy do NOT require a DBS check at present (but will soon). DBS is typically used for roles that involve working directly with children or vulnerable adults, roles such as teachers, childminders, care workers, foster carers, and healthcare workers. These positions are considered regulated activities, where there could be a risk if the wrong person is appointed. Applicants (job candidates) can’t do a standard or enhanced check on themselves – they must obtain checks via registered bodies. NPS are a registered body who can process applications for DBS (PVG in Scotland).  Non-pharmacy jobs and training roles may insist DBS is required.

DBS checks cost each person in the region of £74.00 a time and can only be carried out on your behalf by a registered body. NPS are a registered body for this purpose and can carry out this process on your behalf – individuals cannot apply for a certificate themselves.
